Four Fun Facts About…Houseboating!

  • At the same time the Hadley’s were houseboating in the 1940s, a magazine ad for the “Coolwater” model houseboat kit claimed that a houseboat could be built for as little as $70 in materials!  Today, a nice factory-built houseboat runs about $150,000.
  • In 1958, Cary Grant and Sophia Loren starred in the comedy Houseboat.  Grant played a widower trying to raise three children alone and Sophia Loren played Cinzia, who the children hire as their new maid, but is actually an Italian socialite trying to escape her father.  Sounds entirely rent-able!
  • Lake Cumberland, KY is the undisputed (albeit self-proclaimed) “Houseboating Capital of the World.”
  • The houseboat featured in the 1993 film Sleepless in Seattle went on the market in 2008 for $2.5 Million…Tom Hanks not included!
