Spotlight On… Murphies!

July 14, 2010

This week, we are happy to introduce you to the first in a series of features on Hadley retailers across the country.  We were fortunate enough to interview Carol Murphy, of Murphies, as she sat on her Richmond, VA porch on a well-deserved day off.

Shop Name: Murphies (named after owners Michael and Carol Murphy)

Discovering Hadley (DH): Carol, thank you for taking time on your day off to speak with our readers, Hadley Collectors from across the country.  Can you tell us a little bit about what makes Murphies special?
Carol Murphy (CM): We are located in Carytown, which is known here as “The Mile of Style,” and is made up exclusively of independent shops like ours.  Our clientele is a mix of local residents and visitors, many of whom have vacation homes nearby at the beach or on the river, or “The Rivah” as the locals call it.  Our store is all about color, and our customers can instantly tell that what we have is unique and something they won’t find anywhere else.  I would describe it as traditional with a flare.  And the most special touch has to be our employees, who are like family.   Their dedication is amazing, and we even have past employees who will come back to help us out in a pinch.

DH: How long have you carried Hadley Pottery at Murphies?
CM: Since we opened.  I was familiar with Hadley because my uncle owned a shop in Chagrin Falls, OH and he carried the brand.  It is always in the front window, and it definitely draws people into the store.  We’ve tried other pottery brands over the years, but none have stuck.

DH: And what do your clients love about Hadley?
CM: They love that it is hand-painted, unique, and versatile, great for mixing and matching.  Many of our clients buy Hadley pieces to give as gifts (wedding, housewarming, hostess gifts, new baby), because they know that it will be something different than what everyone else is giving and they like that.  Over the years, I have found that we have four basic types of Hadley customers:

  • Long-time collectors, who tend to gravitate toward the country patterns
  • Newer customers, who are buying Hadley nautical patterns for their beach homes.  The crab and lobster patterns have been GREAT additions for us.
  • Animal lovers, people who are crazy about frogs, pigs, bunnies, cows, and who collect items specifically of these animal types.  They love finding a Hadley piece with their favorite animal on it.
  • Custom/personalized gift givers, who love the ability to add a name or date to their Hadley piece.

DH: What other brands do you carry at Murphies?
CM: In addition to a lot of colorful jewelry, some of our bigger lines are Tervis Tumblers (, Blenko Glass from West Virginia (, Kitras Art Glass from Canada (, and Catstudio the Geography Collection (  Definitely a fun and eclectic mix!

DH: What do you love most about owning your own shop?
CM: Michael and I have lived and traveled all over the United States, and now because of our location in Carytown, we have clients who come into the store from all over, and it is so much fun to meet and talk to them.   And we’ve selected colorful and unique items for our store and merchandised them in a way to start conversations.  It makes every day interesting and fun.

DH: Carol, thanks again for sharing your story, and we hope that all of our readers who pass through Richmond will stop in to say hello and to see your beautiful shop!
